 Abdominal rolls - crunches/situps

I've heard over and over again that you can't spot reduce, but, I don't know what to do with my abdomen!! I have two rolls around my abdomen, one above and one below my belly button. Each hangs about four inches.

I've started doing crunches - 100 a day and my abdomen is killing me. Is this all a big waste of time though? Will this really help? Should I be doing a different exercise? I have approx. 40 more pounds to lose yet.

all you can do is lose the pounds. You can have the most tone muscles in the world, it won't be visible if you have a layer of fat over it.

I was under the impression that when a person loses weight, they don't lose weight in a specific spot, it is lost everywhere.

So......keeping this in mind....my shape will not change as I lose weight, I will always have a bigger abdomen.

Am I correct to think this?

The general idea is the body (each person is different in this) puts on fat in a genetic order..that's why some families get bigger butts and others get beer bellys, also women put it on in specific areas first too..

When you lose weight, it's last on, first off.

So if you have had a big belly from the start, then it will be your belly where it comes off first. For me, it's these manboobs ugh. I've had them as long as I could remember so those won't come off till I'm near the end of the fat

I've had my "big belly" since I've been pregnant. I'm wondering if it is all a result of my pregnancies. My son weighed 10 lb, 10 oz and my daughter weighed 9 lb. I'm only 5'2, so my stomach stretched tremendously. I was almost 5 feet around when I was pregnant with my son.

I guess I'll just have to lose the weight and see!!

It may have stretched the skin out..but when the fat comes off..um..I'd hate to say but likely you will have a sagging stomache. You can tone your stomache muscles but you can't tone the skin up..might have to look into surgery.

I've got surgery scheduled for late September, but, I was hoping I could tone it up so I wouldn't have to have surgery.

I have about 40 pounds to lose. I think I'm going to wait until I get a little closer to my goal weight before I have surgery.

High intensity, interval cardio will get rid of it. 20 minutes 3 times per week. At 20 minutes you should not be able to do another minute w/o collapsing.

I also do about 100 crunches a day but (knocking on wood) haven't had any pain yet. What I do is.... after the crunches lay flat on your stomach. Put your hands under your chest (elbows facing out) and slowly lift your head and shoulders up arching your back. It will be painful at first but after the 4th time it should feel good and your abs shouldn't hurt after that.

I think I know what you mean and yes your abdomen muscles may always be bigger, but they won't always be covered with fat.

they are back extensions....try doing them with your hands on your head like u would on a sit-up and keeping your legs flat on the floor, arch your back up like your doing...now that is pain lol...

just an opinion guys...100 sit ups isnt going to do much...its endurance work, its not going to build abs...try holding some sort of weight to your chest and cross your arms over it and slowly, VERY slowly, crunch up and control the back down phase...15 reps of 3 sets is plenty...abs are a muscle like every other...would u do 100 bicep curls every night? no way...just do em twice per week, you will get better results, i guarentee.

crunches are more like half sit ups...u dont go up all the way..better for your back and neck when u struggle for form with this exercise...this is what i know anyway..sometimes they r labelled one in the same...both are effective

It's in my workout video. 15 mins at the end of crunches for you abs and obliques, should I do them everyday like the video or just 2 times a week and fast forward to the cool down?
