This show lived down to my low expectations. Besides the point that miranda made about treating the CSPI as a unbiased legitimate source there were 2 other things that bothered me most about this show.
One thing I found interesting was how they vilified food companies for running junk food ads aimed at children. That ABC gladly accepts these ads and provides programming aimed at young children specifically so they can sell ads aimed at young children was glossed over.
The other thing they did was blow the impact of agricultural subsidies out of proportion. While 20 billion dollars sounds like a lot of money it works out to less than $50 per US resident. That is not enough money to really influence how people eat.

To me it all comes down to capitalism, the food industry is in business to make money, and we the consumers have the power to change things by the products we buy. If we start purchasing more healthy foods, that's what the companies are going to make to sell to us. But I don't recall anything being said about this, only that is was the food industry's fault. The consumer determines what is produced in reality.
I have to admit that my local food retailers are stocking a lot of healthier foods at not that much higher prices that the high sugar processed junk. I have no problems finding foods to buy at my local grocery store these days, and no longer have to go to the expensive health food stores to find what I need. Consumer power can go a long way and I am seeing an improvement in the food industry, but I guess that side of the story wasn't what Mr. Jenning cared to discuss.

Regarding the ads directed at kids: In the late 50's and 60's, TV advertising directed at kids ran amuck. Every ad run during kids TV shows started out with the phrase, "HEY KIDS!" We were exposed to cigarette ads, with famous "heros" like John Wayne pushing smokes. We were bombarded with ads for toys and candy by our cartoon show hosts. What was different back then? One word--Dad said, "NO!" and meant it.
